About the Role

UKAS is the National Accreditation Body for the United Kingdom. We’re expanding our network of independent Technical Assessors and Experts with specialist knowledge in acoustics to support assessments in line with ISO/IEC 17025 and relevant acoustic calibration standards.

We’re looking for a Technical Assessor with strong, practical experience in the calibration of audiometric and acoustic measurement equipment. You’ll assess organisations such as calibration laboratories to ensure they meet the technical and quality requirements associated with accredited calibration of audiometers, microphones, sound level meters, including their filters and reverberation times noise measurement instrumentation and sound calibrators. This is a flexible, remote role with planned travel for on‑site assessments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess calibration laboratories for compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 and the relevant acoustic standards
  • Review technical documentation and procedures relating to audiometric, acoustic, and noise measurement calibration activities
  • Evaluate conformity with standards including:
    • BS EN ISO 60651
    • BS EN ISO 60804
    • BS EN ISO 61672
    • BS EN 60645 series

  • Provide expert technical input to support accreditation decisions and produce clear, accurate findings

What We’re Looking For:

  • Proven, hands‑on experience in acoustic calibration, including audiometric equipment, microphones, sound level meters, noise measurement instrumentation and sound calibrators
  • Strong understanding of the technical requirements of the relevant standards listed above
  • Familiarity with corrections applied during acoustic calibrations (e.g., atmospheric, coupler, frequency response)
  • Demonstrable experience applying measurement uncertainty principles within acoustic measurements
  • Experience working within, or closely alongside, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited environments
  • Qualifications such as a Degree, HNC, ONC, or other engineering, metrology or acoustics‑related credentials are welcomed but not essential

Personal attributes valued by UKAS include:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assessments
  • A diplomatic, open‑minded and objective approach to assessment
  • Confidence in making evidence‑based judgements
  • Commitment to upholding the highest standards of technical integrity and impartiality

Typical Backgrounds

This role suits professionals with substantial experience in acoustic metrology or calibration. Candidates may have worked as acoustic calibration engineers, audiometric calibration specialists, metrologists in acoustics, laboratory managers, or technical consultants in noise measurement and sound instrumentation. Experience with uncertainty evaluation, calibration methodologies and acoustic measurement standards is essential.

Contract Details

This is a freelance, subcontractor role designed to fit around your existing professional commitments.
You may undertake assessments alongside full‑time employment.
Day rates are competitive and paid per assessment, including preparation and reporting time.

Conflict of Interest
