Respiratory Physiology - Clinical Assessor

Technical Assessor – Independent Contractor (Respiratory Physiology)

Contract Type: Independent Contractor

Location: Remote (UK-based) with UK and potential international travel

Scheme: IQIPS – Adult and Paediatric Respiratory Physiology

About UKAS

UKAS is the UK’s National Accreditation Body, appointed by government to assess organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection, calibration and verification services. Our work underpins competence and confidence in conformity assessment across the UK and internationally.

We work with a wide range of independent technical experts who support our assessments on a contract basis.

The Role

We are seeking experienced Respiratory Physiologists / Clinical Scientists to work with us as Technical Assessors supporting assessments under the IQIPS Adult and Paediatric Respiratory Physiology Scheme.

This role is particularly suited to individuals with strong practical experience in the diagnosis and monitoring of lung disease and breathing disorders in adult and/or paediatric services, who are able to assess the competence of respiratory physiology services delivering patient‑facing diagnostic and monitoring activities.

As a Technical Assessor, you will use your professional expertise to evaluate organisations against IQIPS standards and scheme requirements, undertaking document reviews, on‑site assessments, staff interviews and producing clear, evidence‑based assessment reports.

This role is completed on a self‑employed, flexible basis and can be undertaken alongside existing professional commitments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the technical competence of adult and/or paediatric respiratory physiology services through remote review and on‑site assessment.
  • Evaluate clinical procedures, diagnostic methods, equipment, facilities and quality systems used in respiratory physiology.
  • Assess staff competence in the delivery of respiratory diagnostic and monitoring tests.
  • Observe clinical practice where appropriate, focusing on patient safety, test validity and quality assurance.
  • Review service processes related to reporting, data management and clinical governance.
  • Produce clear, objective and evidence‑based assessment findings to support accreditation decisions.
  • Contribute to initial assessments, surveillance and reassessments under the IQIPS scheme.

What We’re Looking For

Technical Experience and Competence

  • Gas transfer (TLCO and components)
  • Peak expiratory flow measurement and serial monitoring
  • Assessment of bronchodilator response
  • Respiratory muscle assessment (basic techniques)
  • Blood gas analysis (arterial and/or capillary) and non‑invasive oxygenation monitoring
  • Spot oximetry and transcutaneous monitoring
  • Exercise or functional assessment (e.g. field walking tests)
  • Long‑term oxygen therapy (LTOT) and ambulatory oxygen assessment
  • Use of information systems and reporting within respiratory physiology services
  • For Paediatric: Understanding of paediatric‑specific testing considerations, consent, communication and safeguarding

Experience may also include specialist or advanced techniques but full coverage of all respiratory physiology activities are not required (e.g. CPET, bronchial challenge testing, NIV/CPAP support), although full coverage of all respiratory physiology activities is not required. Assessors will declare areas of competence and any exclusions as part of onboarding.

Qualifications and Professional Standing

  • Degree in a relevant scientific discipline, Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ post‑qualification clinical experience in adult respiratory physiology.
  • Registration with RCCP, AHCS or HCPC (desirable).
  • Membership of the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP) and/or ARTP Sleep (desirable).

Personal Attributes Valued by UKAS

  • Strong analytical and clinical judgement.
  • Clear, confident communication with clinical and technical teams.
  • Professional integrity, impartiality and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage assessment preparation, on‑site activity and reporting efficiently.

Conflict of Interest (COI)

A conflict‑of‑interest check will be carried out during onboarding to ensure impartiality. Assessors must declare any actual, potential or perceived conflicts prior to accepting assessment work.
