Fire Suppression - Contracted Technical Assessor

Fire Suppression Contracted Technical Assessor

Location: Remote (UK-based), with UK travel and occasional international travel
Contract Type: Independent Contractor

About the role

UKAS is the national accreditation body for the United Kingdom, responsible for evaluating organisations that provide conformity assessment services, including certification, testing, inspection, and calibration.

We are looking to expand our pool of Contracted Technical Assessors with expertise in fire suppression systems and fire protection products, supporting certification bodies that operate under ISO/IEC 17065.

You will apply your technical expertise to assess how organisations:

  • Apply relevant standards
  • Evaluate test evidence
  • Make certification decisions

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess certification bodies for competence in delivering product certification activities related to fire suppression systems and fire protection products
  • Review technical documentation and certification processes, including product testing evidence, design data, and manufacturer controls
  • Evaluate compliance with relevant standards and certification schemes, including BS, EN and ISO standards applicable to fire suppression, fire alarm and fire resistance products
  • Assess how organisations apply technical standards, interpret test results, and manage certification decisions
  • Provide independent technical input to UKAS assessment teams, supporting accreditation decisions and reporting findings clearly and objectively

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven, practical experience in fire suppression systems and fire protection products, demonstrated through work in design, installation, testing, certification, or technical assurance
  • Knowledge of relevant fire protection standards and specifications (BS, EN, ISO) across suppression, alarm, or fire resistance products
  • Understanding of product certification and conformity assessment processes
  • Qualifications such as a Degree, HNC, ONC, BTech or equivalent in a relevant engineering or fire-related discipline are considered appropriate, though not mandatory where supported by strong practical experience
  • Commitment to technical integrity, impartiality, and independent decision-making

Typical backgrounds may include:

  • Senior / Principal Fire Protection Engineer
  • Fire Suppression or Fire Systems Design Engineer
  • Fire Engineering Consultant
  • Technical Authority / Technical Assurance roles
  • Product or Certification Engineer (fire-related products)
  • Fire testing laboratory or product testing specialist

Strong candidates typically bring:

  • Experience across multiple suppression systems (not just one technology)
  • Involvement in design review or compliance decisions
  • A move towards technical judgement rather than delivery

Conflict of Interest

All applicants are required to submit a conflict-of-interest declaration during the selection and onboarding process. This ensures the impartiality, independence, and integrity of UKAS accreditation activities. Any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts will be evaluated and managed in accordance with UKAS guidelines prior to scheduling assessment activities.
